Let’s talk about the best way to start a blog today. But first, I have a question for you.
Can you remember back about 20 years or so ago?
When making a phone call required 25 cents and a conveniently placed public phone.
Have you ever told your kids about pay phones? Did they believe you? Mine give me a strange sideways kind of look.
Communication has never been easier. These days it seems everyone is online in one way or another. Email, Facebook, Pinterest, and everyone has a YouTube channel.
Whether you have a message that can save the world (don’t we all?) or you simply want to document your life, highlight the milestones of your precious children, and keep the guilt at bay by staying in touch with faraway family – starting a blog is one of the best ways to get your thoughts and memories online.
Starting a blog is completely simple. If I can do it – you definitely can!
You just need to follow three easy steps and you’ll be sharing great photos of your precious babies and letting the world know how awesome you are in no time!

Three easy steps to mommy blogging:
- Domain name registration and hosting
- WordPress installation
- Customizing your corner of the internet
Step 1: Domain name registration and hosting
What’s a domain name anyway? It’s what your website will be called as well as your “address” so to speak online. What do you want to be known as and how do you want people to find you? Take some time and brainstorm some catchy words or phrases that go along with the whole idea of what you plan to share with your readers. My domain is “The Mommy Clause” because – obviously – my blog is about motherhood and all of the messy, crazy things that go along with it.
Once you’ve come up with a few good ideas head over to Bluehost to see if your name is available for registration.
Why do we recommend Bluehost?
Because it’s what we use to host The Mommy Clause.
Your Bluehost website will come with great customer service. When I first began the blog I actually needed help transferring some files and the phone support was quick and friendly. I’ve also used the chat support with great results.
Cost can’t really be beaten. They offer a basic package – which is a pretty great deal if you think about it. You probably spend close to that on your fancy coffee every morning. And, to top it all off, it comes with a free domain registration. Score!
When you get to Bluehost you’ll be asked to choose a hosting plan.
Again, we recommend the basic plan because it’s pretty much all you’ll need in the beginning. If you use our link you’ll save a considerable amount when you pay for a whole year of hosting. Selecting your plan will bring you to the next screen where you’ll actually register your domain name.
If the domain name that you’ve chosen is available – you will simply follow the steps to register that domain and start an account with Bluehost.
One thing we do recommend is purchasing Privacy Protection which will keep your personal information protected from the public.
Step 2: Install WordPress
The next thing you need to do is install WordPress. Thankfully Bluehost makes this all very easy to do.
First, log into your Bluehost account.
There will be a handy dandy little question mark on the left of your screen.
Don’t you love that? Why, yes! I would like you to hold my hand while I go through this process. Like a best friend or loyal Labrador. Ok – not quite – but at least you’re not in this alone.
You’re going to choose to have help with Installing WordPress using MOJO Marketplace.
Following the next few steps will be pretty easy for you.
If you still need help – click that handy little “chat” icon in the top bar and have someone give you some more guidance.
As soon as WordPress is installed you’ll be given some sign in credentials including your admin URL. This should be your blog URL with /wp-admin after it.
You’ll see this screen
where you will log in.
Congratulations! You’ve just set up your blog! Now let’s set up your space!
Step 3: Customizing your little corner of the internet
